After months of anticipation, the night finally arrived--my first Yanni concert. Now don't get me wrong, I have virtually all his CDs (purchased as they came out) and also have all the released versions of Voices as well as Voces. I've monitored both message boards daily, checked the Twitter updates, and generally immersed myself in all things Voices/Yanni (including YouTube video clips from earlier concerts on this tour) since purchasing the tickets in March for the AZ show. Obsessive, I know; but that's the way I approach something that really interests me--I want to know everything. You can never have too much knowledge and/or information. (probably the retired teacher in me?)

But back to last night. I took my brother with me and we had center floor row 5 seats right in the middle--Perfect! Close enough to see expressions on faces, but still back far enough to not be uncomfortably looking up all the time; also back far enough to appreciate the effects on the "screen." From where we were sitting it was hard to get a good impression of audience response. (Maybe because my cheering/clapping sort of interfered??) But one thing was certain--the talent I was privileged to view and hear was astounding! The orchestra members truly seemed to enjoy and appreciate the Voices and each other. Yanni was relaxed and clearly proud of the Voices. And what can I say about Nathan, Ender, Chloe, and Leslie? More adjectives are needed for this part.

Nathan's voice is nothing short of phenomenal and undeniably powerful, although his onstage personae remains more reserved. Leslie is very beautiful and elegant with a sultry voice.

Without question, the two standouts are Ender and Chloe. Both clearly love being on stage, are able to connect with the audience, and give way beyond 100%. They project a sensuality and energy that is intoxicating and mesmerizing. These two were even better in person than on the Acapulco DVD; they have matured and grown in their performance skills since that recording. Chloe's voice is clear and pure, yet filled with a richness that envelopes the listener. Ender's voice lures you in with his warmth and charm and then just blows you away with his range and emotional intensity.

Although everyone had to be exhausted from the stress of touring (not to mention the heat in this part of the country), none of that affected the orchestra or the Voices. After all, they are all professionals. And yet, there seemed to be a bittersweet ambiance to the evening. Clearly, every member enjoys performing. But just as certainly they must all be anxious to get back to home/family. At the same time, there was a feeling of sadness that this very special experience was coming to an end.

I share in that sadness. But I am grateful for this most unique and memorable night. A heartfelt thank you to Yanni and all!
