There’s a portrait of Yanni on the cover of his most recent album, Yanni Voices. As a photograph it’s fairly standard (he’s sitting in front of a piano), but look a little closer, and a shocker comes into view: Yanni’s moustache—one of the iconic new-age moustaches—seems to be gone, as if swept away by a crescendo of violins, bells, and Chinese woodwinds. Everyone remain calm—it’s there, just less bushy, gray, and harder to see. Still, that’s not the album’s only surprise. After 25 years of crafting gushy, hyper-melodic instrumentals, the chart-topping lothario reconfigured some of his classic compositions to feature vocals. The contributing singers will be on hand here to complement Yanni’s 22-person touring orchestra, which includes something called a Paraguayan harp.
