We always have a bear or two wandering around in my area, but this year there seems to have been a population explosion! At least twice a week I have a bear in my yard. Last night at 11:00 I had the biggest bear I have ever seen strolling in my front yard. Last week I had a smaller one right up to my kitchen window! Eeker My cat happened to be sleeping in the window at that time, you should have seen the look on her face when she opened her eyes to see that big face! LOL No kidding, I am a little more than fearful to be out in my own yard. You never know when they will show up, could be anytime of the day or night. They are very very quiet as well, they just pop out of the bushes. I have tried all kinds of deterents and nothing has worked so far. For some reason they love to cut through on my property to wherever they are going. This is an unusual time of the year for them to be around. Usually in August they are deep in the woods munching on all the berries. This makes me think that the berry crop this year is bad. Possible due to all the rain we had this year. Let me tell you, it is very frightning to be outside and all of a sudden there is a bear in front of you. (Did I already mention that?)
Anyway, just had to vent about it. They are a beautiful animal though. Smiler

Bare bear stories! I love 'em. Have you named any of them Teddy yet? No? Well, if one follows you home from a secret fishing trip, just let them have your fish. That way you won't have to explain why you were fishing when you were supposed to be doing your chores. Also, the bear won't follow you all the way home. (hopefully)

I don't think I would want such close neighbors as those furry critters. Be careful, pulllleeeez

Wow Crissy, your own backyard bear sanctuary. Has anyone tried to trap and relocate the critters? Seems like they would be a threat to pets and humans.

confessions are great LOLers...

When I first read the topic heading, I thought the title was: "Beans Galore" and that it was a topic about gas.

I wish they could relocate some of these bears, but this is a small town, only 3000 residents, but a large land mass. As I said, the bears just pass thru, so by the time you called someone they would be gone. Besides, animal control is only part time, and a voluntary position. I wanted to live in the country and I guess this is just part of it. I know in my mind that the bears are not out to hurt or bother me, but it takes all my willpower to make myself not run when I encounter them. When you run, you wake up their prey instinct. Eeker Haven't seen any in a couple of days. Smiler

Sherry, I have a hummingbird feeder and so far, knock on wood, they have never gone near it. Now, don't they have grisley bears in Colorado? YIKES!! At least here we only have black bears, and they are fairly easy going unless startled or cornered. I just worry about my dog getting tangled up with one. Last year nearby, a dog was killed by a bear with just one swipe of its paw. The dog startled the bear in the dark. Frowner Hopefully they will go back into the deep woods again soon.
